Truck Driving
MISSION
The Truck Driving program is designed to enable the trainee to acquire a Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License. In addition to providing the knowledge and skills needed for licensure as a truck driver, the course seeks to instill in each student a sense of safety, integrity, responsibility and professionalism for the occupation.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must be at least 21 years of age; possess satisfactory reading ability and communicate effectively; pass a certified medical exam required by the Department of Transportation; pass drug-screening tests; have a good driving record as verified by the Department of Safety; and hold a valid driver’s license in the state of Tennessee. Before registering, students must obtain a Obtain Drivers Permit for Class A (DPA) by passing written tests at the Department of Motor Vehicles.
COURSE CONTENT
Units of instructions include customer relations; safety regulations; commercial driver license regulations; traffic law; road atlas and highway routes; instruments and cab controls; engine system; air brake systems; adverse weather conditions; clutch, gear and transmission patterns; coupling and uncoupling trailers; obstacle course and backing procedures; defensive driving; and on-the-road driving experiences.

- 216 Total Instructional Hours
- Course will be offered six times annually
- Course length: 36 training days

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Responsibilities of the modern truck driver include being able to handle a tractor/semi-trailer under adverse road conditions or traffic, drive coast-to-coast or border-to-border, maintain a flexible work schedule including weekends and holidays, keep a daily log of activities and perform other paperwork as required, guarantee "on-time deliveries" to consignees and properly perform frequent inspections of equipment to minimize breakdowns and equipment related accidents.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Employment opportunities are numerous for both long-haul and local drivers. During the course of training, students will have the opportunity to talk with representatives from various trucking firms in the area. The beginning truck driver can expect to earn $40,000 per year or more. After a few years of driving experience, drivers may earn $60,000 or more in some environments.
