Drafting and CAD Technology

MISSION

The Drafting and CAD Technology program is designed to impart the skills and knowledge necessary for employment in the ever-changing world of computer aided drafting & design. Students advance at his/her own pace. Additionally, students learn skills that will prepare them to advance their education in architectural, engineering or industrial technology.

BASIC DRAFTING

A student without previous drafting experience or training will study Basic Drafting. This will include the proper use of drafting tools and equipment, geometric construction techniques, math skills needed to solve drafting problems, and blueprint reading. The basic program will also introduce basic machining and manufacturing processes used in industry.

SPECIALIZED AREA

After successful completion of the basic drafting curriculum, the student chooses a unit of specialization; either Architectural or Mechanical drafting.

CREDIT TRANSFER

High school student enrolled in Tech Prep courses may receive credit for previous training. Graduates of the Drafting program may be granted up to 32 semester hours of credit toward an Associate Degree at a two-year college governed by the Tennessee Board of Regents.

COST OF TRAINING

The estimated total cost of training is $3,600. This includes text books, supplies, and quarterly fees (tuition). This is an approximate number and may be more depending on the exact cost of text books, supplies, and tuition.

COMPUTER AIDED DRAFTING

Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) is the primary focus of this program. For those individuals with a manual drafting or an engineering background who wish to update their skills there is a CAD only curriculum. Students may study either AutoCAD Release 2009 or MicroStation Version 8. Students are also exposed to the products contained in the AutoDesk Design Institute package. This software package includes Autodesk Inventor and Autodesk Revit.

Students interested in mechanical drafting will train with Solid Works or Inventor in a hands-on environment that includes design and CNC applications. We accomplish this through a cooperative exchange between the Drafting and CAD Technology and Machine Tool Technology classes.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

There are numerous employment opportunities for graduates of this program in construction, transportation, communications, utilities and manufacturing industries.

ENROLLMENT

Because instruction is individualized, students may enroll when there is a vacancy. However, enrollment is restricted to the first eight weeks of a trimester. The curriculum spans sixteen (16) months (4 trimesters) or 1728 clock hours, students with previous training or who work at a faster pace will complete the program in less time. Also, advanced students can take advantage of the Cooperative Education program to obtain real world work experience.

TRAINING SCHEDULE

Full-time Classes: 7:45 a.m to 2:15 p.m. Monday through Friday

ON-LINE TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
