Computer Operations Technology
MISSION
The purpose of the Computer Operations Technology program is to provide theoretical knowledge and applicable skills necessary for an individual to work in the constantly evolving computing industry today. Instruction provided will assist the student in obtaining certifications recognized in today’s computer and information technology market.
COURSE OF STUDY
The course of study will begin with basic computer concepts and keyboarding. Theoretical instruction combined with practical applications will be provided in a variety of software and hardware systems commonly used in business today.
Software applications in Microsoft Office will include word processing, spreadsheets, database management, desktop publishing, multimedia presentations and communications.
Fundamentals of system setup, hardware assembly, troubleshooting, maintenance and repair are included in the curriculum for students who wish to obtain A+ Certification.
Installation, configuration, and maintenance of both local and wide area networks are also included to provide the student the opportunity to achieve Network+ Certification.
Students who demonstrate competencies for specific proficiency levels will be awarded a certificate or diploma, depending upon the specific exit level. Job proficiency levels and respective awards that might be earned by the student include the following:
An Information Processing Technician investigates and resolves computer software and hardware problems. (Certificate)
A Personal Computer Hardware Technician analyzes data processing requirements to plan a data processing system that will provide system capabilities required for projected workloads and plans the layout and installation of new or modified systems. (Certificate)
A Microcomputer Specialist installs, modifies, and makes minor repairs to microcomputer hardware and software systems and provides technical assistance and training to system users. (Diploma)
A Networking Specialist installs, configures and monitors data communications networks to ensure that the network is available to all system users in addition to resolving any data communications problems. (Diploma)
COST OF TRAINING
The cost of this program will include fees of $662.00 per quarter. In addition, the student is responsible for books, supplies, tools, certification fees, etc. required for training and future employment, estimated at $900.00 for the entire course.
TRAINING SCHEDULE
Monday through Friday - 7:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
5 trimesters or 20 months - 2160 clock hours
UNITS OF INSTRUCTION
Units of instruction include: Computer Safety, Keyboarding, Computer Concepts, Basic Operating Systems, Advanced Operating Systems, Microsoft Office (Professional Edition): Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher; Visual Basic .net; Advanced Graphics (Adobe Photoshop); Hardware Maintenance, Repair Fundamentals and A+ Certification Preparation; Network+ Certification Preparation; Web Page Design (Front Page); Java; Advanced Databases.
CREDIT TRANSFER
Graduates of the Computer Operations Technology program may be granted up to 21 hours toward an Associate of Applied Science in Professional Studies: concentration in Information Technology in the Tennessee Board of Regents Online Degree Program.
High school student enrolled in Tech Prep courses may receive credit for previous training. Graduates of the Computer Operations Technology program may be granted up to 30 semester hours of credit toward an Associate of Applied Science Degree in General Technology at a two-year college governed by the Tennessee Board of Regents.
ONLINE TRAINING
The Tennessee Board of Regents and Tennessee Technology Centers offers the following online Certificates and Diploma in a 15 week standard cycle.
Diploma -- Computer Operation (1296 clock hours)
Certificate -- PC Operator (432 hours) Certificate -- Information Processing Technician (864 clock hours)
